This debate is ongoing in many circles at present, and the content you've shared mirrors some of the more popular inputs. While I believe the social trends are a tad over-hyped (starting with the name "Web 2.0"... gimme a break LOL) I do see big value in this movement.

Ultimately it's like anything else in the online marketing world: Those who *slow down,* and take the time to explore it will benefit, and those who spend one day on it and don't get rich will say it "doesn't work".

I don't know about Social Networking, but I'd say Social Marketing has a good deal of relevance at the moment.

I made a series of links between one bookmarking site and 10 videos I have posted around the web - and got pg 1 organic rank for my phrase on Google, in less than 2 hours.

Heck, at the moment, I have #1 Google rank for more than one phrase, just by posting on Craigslist every 2 days.

SEM is wide open right now, but the question I have is how long will it last? It would be a damn shame to learn a set of skills and spend a bunch of time only to watch it become irrelevant in 12-18 months!
