Online Promotion Tips: Use Facebook

Online promotion means using all available resources online.

Update: It's been about 24 hours since we sent our first email announcement about the free teleseminar we're presenting as an intro to our Law of Action 2.0 program. Remember, as I mentioned in my last post our goal is 1,000 registrations. As of this posting, we have 304 registrations. Woot! A testament to the power of a well written email AND the joint venturing with a colleague who also has a big list.

We've also reached 11% of our goal for LOA registrations from alumni of our first program.

OK, now what?

Use Facebook to Extend Your Reach

The next order of business, after the email promo went out was to get the teleseminar posted on Facebook. I set up an Event page for the 5 Internet Marketing Traps class. I used some of the copy from the landing page and some from the email promo. Then, I invited all my "friends." I currently have 1,062 Facebook friends.  You can only invite 100 people at a time so it takes awhile.

A couple of things to remember when setting up an event and inviting friends:

1.  If your program REQUIRES registration, you must spell that out VERY CLEARLY at least a couple of times in the event notice. If you look at my event, you'll see this twice:

REGISTRATION REQUIRED TO ATTEND

June 24, 2008
6 p.m. Eastern Time (3 p.m. Pacific Time)

**************************************

Why? Because when people RSVP on Facebook, they don't automatically "register" for your event. You must drive them to the sign up page. It's so easy to RSVP by simply clicking a button that says Yes, No or Maybe and the person never goes to your event page.

When someone does RSVP you can then send all guests a message. As the date of the class approaches, I will send a message reminding "guests" they need to actually register in order to get the dial-in details. Most will not have done that yet.

So why bother with a Facebook event?  Because every time someone responds to your invitation, it gets posted on their profile, which means ALL their friends see the class info too. You can expand your reach exponentially.

And, your event will now be indexed by the search engines on a site with a high page rank.

2.  When you send the invites to your friends, make sure you include a short note AND ask them to click the Share button to let their friends know about the class. Also include the Share request in the description of your event. You've got to let people know what you want them to do.

Share the Love

When a friend clicks on the Share button, again, it pushes the info about your event onto their profile and gives you even more exposure.

As time gets closer to your event, you may need to click the Share button yourself in order to keep your Event visible on your own profile. You should also use the Posted Items app (in the left sidebar) to post the URL to your landing page. Again, this pushes the info into your profile feed so others keep seeing it.

How you use this will depend on how active you are on Facebook. Your profile feed displays 10 items. I tend to cycle through 1-20 items a day if I'm adding new friends and posting on friends' walls. Therefore events move off my profile pretty fast. If you're not that active, you won't need to keep pushing your event out.

Enough for today. Tomorrow...Twitter.
