Every December Google releases their annual Zeitgeist report. The report captures the "spirit of the times" in context of emerging trends bases on billions of searches worldwide.
The report is sliced and diced a variety of way: global, by country, the U.S., politics, show biz, trendsetters, and sports.
As I was surfing through the various top 10 search lists, I realized this is a great research tool. If your niche, topic or content revolves around any of the search terms, you now know the top keyword terms to use in your content. For example, here's the list of top "how to" searches:
- how to draw
- how to kiss
- how to write
- how to cook
- how to tie
- how to hack
- how to run
- how to cite
- how to paint
- how to spell
If you teach and blog about writing, then including "how to write" in some of your posts will probably help you get found by some prospective clients. If you run a food, cooking or recipe site, then using "how to cook" in a few blog post titles and content, will most likely help you get found by more readers. See where I'm going with this? A few posts on "how to kiss" would probably drive a lot of organic traffic to a dating site.
If nothing else, Google's Zeitgeist 2008 report is an interesting read to see the trends of our times as reflected in what we're searching for online.
