Denise, I encourage my clients to comment on industry specific blogs. When you add your voice to some of the major media sites (for me, wowowow or Shine, let's say) it's possible you'll be featured on the site. And, because comments are searchable, you could be returned in a search on that topic. When there is opportunity to comment on a hot topic in the news, it's an opportunity to be noticed not only by the major media site, but by Google, and everyone interested in that topic.
I have personally appeared on the news pages of Yahoo! and the Wall Street Journal, to name just a couple of places my comments have given me more visibility.

Make your posts to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn count. It may be obvious to post content relative to your target market and include links. The less obvious is to post what is core to your credo, that shows your passion and that helps other people connect to what matters most to them. Sometimes the things I post because I just have to communicate are the ones that get passed around, retweeted, commented on. Bottom line - show who you are!

Love your tip, Yvonne, and thanks for adding this to the conversation. I also encourage clients to comment on blogs in their niche as a way of increasing their exposure and connecting with colleagues who may become joint venture partners.

Sandy, thanks for adding this tip. You're absolutely right that sharing info about things you're passionate about is a great way to extend your reach and may create visibility for you in a whole new niche with a new audience who shares your passion.

Thank you for mentioning Ping.fm. I was using it earlier this year and for some reason stopped doing so. Definitely need to give it another look and see what is new.
I have several potential clients who want to boost their online presence, yet are overwhelmed by all the different places they think they should be. I stress to them that you don't have to do everything at once. Determine 2-3 places that would be most effective and start there. Once comfortable with those, then add in another one or two, get used to them, then add more, etc.I also encourage them to automate what they can,and to schedule a time each day to work on it.

Hi Denise,
Sounds very interesting. I made some simple suggestions to my friends to comment to different industry blog sites for them to make exposure to different sites and to many people.
Your article is very helpful to us.

OK here's my tip on visibility - before you can be visible you need to have something for people to see - write something original - yes a blog, start up a YouTube channel, do a podcast - whatever is your thing just make it yours - you need some original content- think of it this way Twitter, Facebook are fast moving shallow streams - a blog is a deep lake. If you don't create then you're simply "pushing noise"and that will make you invisible at best and at worst boring.

Old School Tip: Have web address printed onto your business cards and in your books or other "non-virtual" information you distribute. Can't hurt, you have to print them anyway.

I totally agree with your approach. I advise starting with a blog since you get the most bang for your buck and your time and then add the social networks one at a time as you get comfortable with them.

Mike, I like your metaphors for blogging and social networking sites! You know where I stand on this issue: BLOG is the most important and use the social sites to drive people back to your blog. And yes, you've got to have something original to say.
Thanks for your contribution and blog on!
